The Green Sanctuary

I have always wanted to live in Singapore. I love the city.

In 2015, when we chose our little apartment in the large, sprawling condominium in the east, my main criteria was a decent kitchen space (no brushing elbows with family members while cooking) and my husband’s condition was a balcony – if possible with a view of the sea. We cannot see the sea, as much as we would like to, but at least we got a good balcony.

After a couple of weeks of settling down, my parents came down for a visit. By then, I had realized how much I missed the mini garden at the back of our house. So, we bought a few pots, some packets of soil, and seeds. Then, set about creating our tiny balcony garden.

Year 2015 – The beginning of our little garden…

We were so excited with our green patch, that I would keep taking photos. Look how it has grown by Diwali, the following year (2016).

Year 2016 – Diwali

Since we manufactured organic bio-stimulants for plants in India, on his next trip to Singapore, my father brought along some bottles as samples. My husband, Rahul, would tend to the garden every Sunday, and apply these products whenever necessary. We are proud to be totally organic.

Over the past few years, we kept adding to the garden… Some new plants flourished, some perished quickly. My mother-in-law brought Tulsi seeds from her plant in Mumbai. We are blessed that it has grown well in Singapore.

As a surprise for my husband, I bought sunflower seeds, as it is his favourite flower. Earlier we had bought a plant, and it had died. With a lot of trepidation, we planted the seeds. Till date, the biggest success is when I got two sunflowers to bloom.

Although Rahul dislikes shopping, in a garden store, he is absolutely crazy. Of course, I match every step, as we pick up random plants, just to add colour to our precious balcony.

After several discussions, finally I bought some seeds for a vegetable, Karela – bitter gourd (local variety). My first step towards creating a small vegetable garden. We also bought a curry leaf plant and some basil.

Finally, I managed to acquire a designer garden stand! It just completes the entire set-up.

And the kitchen garden flourished… Flowers in the bitter gourd plant.
