“These are extraordinary times!”
How many times have we heard it being said these days? – on television, on talk shows, on radio, in newspapers, amongst friends… Everywhere!
It has become the norm!
Therefore, these extraordinary times call for extraordinary ways of coping.
While we are all at home, vigilant and over-worked, while we are revelling in additional family time and the freedom from office-culture, we are also at times unconsciously suppressing our anxiety for our future – will we still have a job, will we have pay-cuts, are our children safe at school, when will we fly home to visit parents, when will be able to take a holiday – when will life reset itself from the “new normal” to the “old familiar normal”?
These anxieties gradually build up – until the negative emotions start affecting our life.
Studies have shown that there is an emotional guidance scale in which the upward spiral takes us from being content to pure joy, while the downward spiral takes us from mere boredom to deep fear and depression. The emotions we deal with regularly let us know where we are in this scale.

One of the ways of dealing with stress, is an ancient method called Sound Therapy. Sound, or vibration, has deep roots in healing and meditation. It has been used in many cultures, from the Australian aborigines, 40,000 years ago, to the Tibetan tribes, to ancient Indian healing practices. Using a range of Tibetan singing bowls, crystal singing bowls, gongs, cymbals and various kinds of bells and tuning forks, this healing process has been known to relieve physical and emotional pain, reduce anxiety, anger, depression, increase mobility and lower blood pressure, while promoting an overall sense of well-being.
Although there are many theories of how it works, one of the main belief systems is that every emotion vibrates at a different level. A physical pain is often an outer manifestation of an inner (read emotional / mental) trauma. The practitioner creates vibrations that affect the perception of pain in the brain, that calm the nerves and that increase the flow of energy inside the whole body. The positive emotions vibrate at a higher frequency, giving us a feeling of expansion. On the other hand, when we are down and out, our muscles contract, thus the vibrations are at a lower frequency.

These therapies work from within – because unless something heals within, the outer symptoms will remain the same or will repeat themselves. These methods are not pills that will numb the pain for a while and give you some relief, but long-term tools to change the course of the lingering problems.
Last month, I participated in several one-hour-long guided Sound Healing meditations (also known as Sound Immersions) with Vibha from The Radiant Lotus Wellness Studio, who is a trained and skilled practitioner, and witnessed some remarkable effects. These were virtual group sessions, and that is one big advantage of this therapy. We can experience it from anywhere in the world.
In the first session, I was nervous, because being restless, I did not know if I could stay still for an hour. I also disliked being bound to a place / position, and the earphones increased my sense of claustrophobia. But I had committed to experiencing the world of energy, so I stuck on. While the writer within was more eager to watch Vibha practice her craft, the sincere patient won out, and I let myself go with the flow.
I drifted in and out of a cosy snooze, my mind wondering on various topics. I felt tingling sensations on my face; at times, the right side felt heavier than the left, a headache was starting. However, after the session, I felt refreshed. During one of the later sessions, I fell into such deep slumber that I did not wake up until almost two hours later.
Another time, I felt a deep lethargy as if I could not move my limbs. I was aware of my thoughts / dreams, but I just could not hear Vibha’s voice. Even after the meditation ended, I could not move. My mind reminded me that I had several chores to complete, that the clock was ticking, but I struggled to make my body obey my mind. Vibha explained that I might have gone in very deep, and there could be a lot of energy displacement and so my physical body was gradually re-adjusting. She advised me to stay hydrated and let my body express itself without over-intellectualising it.
For a person who has an overactive mind and a sceptical outlook in life, this was a totally incredible experience. I felt refreshed, more relaxed and calmer. The creative juices were following, I felt enthused about the future.
While researching the article, Vibha told me, that she has had clients who have burst out laughing during a session without any reason; a germophobe, who is having a terrible time because of Covid-19 and th fear of infection, has been able to control her anxiety in only four sessions (once a week sessions); someone approached her for a persistent cough, and after a few sessions of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) she could resume singing and painting, which she had not done for years. (I am unaware of any patient’s identity – I simply wanted to share some amazing results of these therapies).
One more thing Vibha said that really left a mark was, “Healing does not mean that the past is erased, it just does not hold you captive anymore!”
Making peace with oneself is life changing – it transforms the lens through which you observe the world within and out.

Life is handing out lemons to all these days, and sometimes merely making lemon juice does not cut it.
We need to try something new, something that has a deeper impact, something that lasts longer with tangible and intangible benefits.
For unless we change the path on which we tread, the destination will always remain the same (for example: if we constantly say that we have problems, we will have them, but if we think and repeatedly tell ourselves that we are healthy and well, we will be that too – it is all about Mind over Matter, isn’t it?).
I would highly recommend you try The Sound Healing (or any other therapies that she offers) with Vibha, at The Radiant Lotus Wellness Studio. They have a lot of Zoom sessions going on, at very reasonable prices.
When a pandemic hits you, you cannot hit it back. Yet you cannot let it take over your life. To regain control – focus on what you love or seek an unusual goal.
It is normal to be anxious. It is normal to be happy.
Let us choose to release the negative energy. Let us choose to feel joy.
